If you've always wondered what to do to raise your blacksmith, see the table below. Although it is not a strict law to follow, it provides a good basis for what you can do to raise your skill at any given time.

85 - 95	Breast Plate
95 - 100	Breast Plate (ores: Spike a Dark Pagan)
100 - 105	Breast Plate (ores: Black Dwarf a Bronze)
105 - 110	Breast Plate (ores: Onyx a Spectral)
110 - 115	Breast Plate (ores: Ice Rock a Undead)
115 - 120	Breast Plate (ores: Virginity a Gold)
120 - 125	Breast Plate (ores: Gold a Executor)
125 - 129	Breast Plate (ores: Peachblue a Anra)
129 and further	Breast Plate (ores: Crystal a Goddess)

Tips

1: Bringing your skill from 0 to 30 spends something around 1500 ingots, so it's best to train your skill on an NPC for 300gp. Approach an NPC and type vendor train. He will list the skills he can train. If the blacksmith skill is in the list, type: vendor train blacksmith. The NPC will tell you the price, which is usually 300gp. Drag the coins over the NPC and your skill will increase.

2: In general, make many items that require few ingots

3: Use items to help your success rate, and save ingots. You'll need a boost of at least 15% before you notice any difference. Stop using items when your skill reaches 90%, as they do not make much difference after that. Use them only to re-smelt the items.

4: If you are a skilled crafter (level 1 or higher), skip an item from the list for each level of expertise. For example, a crafter level 2 with 75 blacksmith, could do breastplate instead of plate arms. But a level 3, for not being able to do breastplate with spike ore, would make instead with iron ore.

5: Strength apparently helps in the success rate, so try mining a lot to rise strength and look for items that increase your strength. You will notice difference with the skill below 90, but after that it is barely noticeable.
